Laboratory
TWO MAJOR DIFFERENCES:
Difference 1: TIME
The failure in the field appeared after 18 months of service while the failure in the laboratory appeared after 72 hours of testing.
Difference 2: COST
The cost of the failure in the field was 80 times the cost of the failure in the laboratory.
All coatings and inhibitor chemicals will be
tested, either in a simulated environment or in your service environment. Laboratory tests predict performance and avoid costly field
failures.
Charter Coating is dedicated to the understanding of protective coatings and inhibitor chemicals. Performance is predicted based on accelerated laboratory tests in simulated environments which are used to:
- Show relative performance between products
- Relate to field performance
- Give rapid reproducible results
- Examine main failure mechanisms
- Identify compatibility problems or synergies
Tests performed in our laboratories include:
- Working to CSA, ASTM, NACE, AWWA, DIN, CGSB, API, and ISO standard methods
- Sour gas tests
- Internal and external coating evaluation and material selection
- Coating compatibility tests for oil, gas, potable water, structural steel and bio-containment laboratories
- Inhibitor compatibility and activity tests
- Microbiological activity
- Interpretive reports
- Photographic documentation
It would be impossible to detail all the different tests that we are conducting but we have summarised some so that you have a better understanding of what the tests are for and how they are conducted.
